Named after the first president of the United States. The arch also has frieze art on the underside of the arch. The park and arch were built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Presidents inauguration in New York City in 1789. Washington Square park is one of the most famous and visited parks in the city. Many of the building surround the park belong to New York University. The park attracts street performers alike. There are two geocaches in the park. One traditional and one Virtual.
