The museum used to be home to the soldiers of the mission. The home was converted to a public museum about the culture of the city of San Juan Capistrano. The plaque says, "May date back to 1794. It was part of two buildings known as Hacienda Aguilar. This adobe is associated with Don Blas Aguilar, the last Alcalde (Mayor) of the Mexican period."
