A sign beside the round describes its history:
This tree was taken from Weeks Lake in 1976 and the sample round was donated to the Sooke Region Museum in that year. 1,227 growth rings were counted.

The Douglas-fir grows on the southern coast of British Columbia and on Vancouver Island. These trees can reach up to 85 metres in height on the coast and 42 metres in the interior. The wood is dense, durable and strong. The cones are forked, the needles are flat, fragrant, and soft to the touch, and the bark is furrowed. Modern uses include heavy-duty construction such as wharves, trestles, bridge parts, commercial buildings and general house construction.
A sign mounted on the round identifies world events that happened throughout the tree's history:
  • 745 A.D. - Tree's life begins
  • 800 A.D. - Beginning of the collapse of the Classic Mayan Civilization
  • 843 A.D. - The Treaty of Verdun divides Charlemagne's empire between his grandsons, creating the future French and German nations
  • 904 A.D. - Founding of the Royal Mint in England, which currently produces coins for more than 100 countries
  • 1000 A.D. - Vikings land in Newfoundland
  • 1066 A.D. - Normans defeat Anglo-Saxons at Battle of Hastings
  • 1206 A.D. - Genghis Khan unites tribes of Mongolia initiating the largest contiguous empire in world history
  • 1492 A.D. - Christopher Columbus's first voyage to the Americas
  • 1564 A.D. - William Shakespeare born
  • 1707 A.D. - England and Scotland unite, forming the Kingdom of Great Britain
  • 1815 A.D. - Napoleon defeated at the Battle of Waterloo
