Gwen Ffrangcon Davies made her stage debut in 1911. In 1924 she played Juliet to John Gielgud’s Romeo. She was cast by Gielgud as Queen Anne in Richard of Bordeaux in 1934, and in 1942 played Lady Macbeth to Gielgud’s Macbeth. She appeared with Ivor Novello in Henry V and appeared as Mrs Manningham in the production of Gas Light by Patrick Hamilton, both in 1938.

She was awarded the Evening Standard Award in 1958 for her performance as Mary Tyrone in Long Day’s Journey Into Night. In the 1960s she appeared in the Hammer Horror series of films. Her last acting appearance was in 1991 in the Sherlock Holmes story The Master Blackmailer.

At the age of 100 she was created a Dame Commander of the British Empire, for her services to drama.
