In Chapter 4 "Saeculum Aureum" of Marguertie Yorcenars's novel "Memoirs of Hadrian" the Emperor Hadrian is mourning the recent suicide of his lover, Antinous. He begins to remember a series of incidents where people have acted irrationally over a loss..and then he also recalls "In the underground chambers of the Colosseum, I had been shown lions pining away because the dog with which their keepers had accustomed them to live had been taken away."
The "memoirs" make reference to the Colosseum on at least one other ocassion without specifically mentioning the site.
