The marker stands next to the old north turnstile, and it says:

In remembrance of

Lee Roy Birdwell
Virgil Ray Dye

Who lost their lives in the fire
which destroyed West Hall
January 2, 1944

Interestingly, the URL for this waymark links to a contemporary copy of The Record from January 19, 1944. This is the official publication of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, and it lists obituaries for these two young men, while indicating that a fund had been set up to house those displaced by the fire and to ultimately build a new residence hall.
