It is situated in Bradford's memorial gardens behind the World War I cenotaph and near to a statue of Queen Victoria. It was erected in time for the Annual Service of Remembrance in 2013. At the moment there is a marked difference in the colour of the stone but it is anticipated that the stone will change colour over time to match that of the statue.

The memorial was proposed by by the widow of Sergeant Peter Rayner, who died in Afghanistan in 2010.

Bradford Council worked with the Royal British Legion on the design.
