The beds of limestone are immediately north of Middle Street on Victoria Island. Waymarkers can park right beside the site. Victoria Island is in the Ottawa River, separating Ontario from Quebec. Waymarkers will notice the nearby remnants of hydro-electric power stations. Construction of the power stations led to the discovery of the limestone beds.
Concerning the stratigraphic column in which these limestone beds exist, they are part of the Verulam formation of the Ottawa group in the Ordovician period. During that period, North America was located in the tropics. Limestone today was once the loose sediment at the bottom of a tropical sea.
Trace fossils are the most abundant feature at this site. Signs of burrowing creatures are everywhere. Waymarkers will also notice many fossils resembling beads. These were once crinoids, creatures commonly called sea lilies. Waymarkers will discover many more types of fossils.
Remember, only observe. This fossil location is undeveloped. There is no restricted access but there is also no interpretive signage. Leave the site as it is, available for future visits.
What kinds of fossils are found here: burrowing tracks and shelly fossils
