A series of signs within the park's pavilion provides the following information about the gardens and the alligator sculpture:
"The park you are visiting had its origins as a private garden designed and nurtured by two generations of women: Blanche Butler Ames and her daughter Blanche Ames Ames. They used their creative talents to develop the garden with ponds, pathways, sculpture and various destinations to appeal to young and old alike.
Blanche Butler Ames surmised that the Timucuan Indians had used the point as a landing. She designed an Indian head sculpture with the inscription "Indian Well" at the spring of sulfur water that flowed out of the ground as an artesian well. This water flow she used to connect a series of ponds that flow through the park to empty into the river.
Throughout the garden one can see other fanciful touches such as a fierce alligator with open mouth on the bank of the pond crafted from concrete."
The alligator is a replica of its original and was installed in 1994.
