Boston Common, the famous green space in Boston serves as the location for a curious scene in Sylvia Plath's novel "The Bell Jar".
In Chapter 11, the main charcter, Esther Greenwood, has just left her psychiatrist's office and is picked up by her mother. Then Greenwood, who narrates the story, discusses an event...whether real or imagined is unclear, where she meets a young sailor in Boston Commons. As the sailor wants to get romantic, Greenwood imagines that she sees an acquaintance...but it turns out that she is mistaken. She lies to the sailor, says she is an orphan from Chicago and needs to find the subway and abruptly leaves.
