This Deadman’s Log and Mooring Chain is located on the grounds of the Alton Historical Museum. It has a marker that tells a little about its history. It reads:

Deadman’s Log & Mooring Chain. Used by the Eagle Packet Company. Discovered by the firm of Sheppard, Morgan, and Schwaab at the foot of Piasa Street on the Alton Landing on the Mississippi River.

A log was buried vertically in a six foot hole and heavy metal rings were attached. Lines from the steamboats were then secured to these mooring rings. This log was originally approximately 14 feet long.
Group that erected the marker: Alton Historical Society.
