US Highway 99 is alive and well, running down the eastern side of California's Central Valley. It has been reduced to the status of state highway but still bears its historic '99' designation. When name highways, instead of numbering them, was in vogue during the early days of long-distance automobile travel, US Highway 99 was named the 'Jefferson Davis Highway' to honor the man who had surveyed the first three east-west military roads across the country.
Another Jefferson Davis Highway marker was discovered in the small town of Hornbrook in northern California and can be visited here as well as containing some additional history on the 'Jefferson Davis Highway Out West'.
