A kissing gate is a type of gate which allows people to pass through, but not livestock. They are usually designed to be used by people on foot, but this one can be used by wheelchairs as well.

The gate gives access to the grounds of the stately home, Chatsworth House. The house has a car park in the grounds and has wheel chair facilities in the house, but this gate gives access to the grounds of the house from outside the park.

Chatsworth's park covers about 1,000 acres (4.0 km2) and is open to the public free of charge all year-round. There are many paths across the parkland and this gate can be accessed from the village of Baslow.

There is a plaque next to the gate with the following text.
