The Bohemian Forest (Sumava) is a low mountain range in Central Europe. Geographically, the mountains extend from South Bohemia in the Czech Republic to Austria and Bavaria in Germany. They create a natural border between the Czech Republic on one side and Germany and Austria on the other.
About Zelezna Ruda
The first settlement was founded in the first half of the 16th century. At the end of the 19th century the town became more prominent thanks to the railway connection Pilsen - Bavaria. Tourists started visiting this area more and more, but WWII put a stop to any further development. Tourism was revived again at the beginning of the 1960’s when a border crossing point was reopened. But the true tourist boom came post 1990 when the borders were opened. Železná Ruda became an important centre for tourism throughout the year.
The main feature of the town is undoubtedly the Church of St Mary the Helper from Hvezda built in the Baroque style by the Count Wolf Jindrich Nothaf of Wernbergu during 1729 –1732.

Puvodní osada vznikla v první polovine 16.století. Koncem 19.století nabylo mesto na významu vybudováním železnicní trate z Plzne do Bavorska. Turistický ruch za druhé svetové války upadal a vrátil se až pocátkem šedesátých let 20.století, kdy byl opet otevren silnicní hranicní prechod. Ovšem k opravdovému nárustu turistiky došlo až po úplném otevrení hranic v roce 1990. Tím se stala Železná Ruda a celé okolí významným strediskem letního a zimního turistického ruchu.
K dominantám mesta patrí bezesporu kostel Panny Marie Pomocné z Hvezdy, který nechal v Barokním stylu vybudovat v letech 1729 –1732 hrabe Wolf Jindrich Nothaf z Wernbergu. Jeho zajímavostí je pudorys šesticípé hvezdy a dve kopule s hvezdou. V interiéru mužete obdivovat treba mariánský oltární obraz, který je jednou ze dvou kopií obrazu Madony s dítetem od Lucase Cranacha.
