Martin Roath, a local farmer, is found murdered in his farm house in Midsomer Worthy. Roath had been shot from a shotgun on a dresser, with its trigger tied to the dead man’s foot. Made to look like suicide, but the body was full of a tranquilliser called tanzine. The drug had been administered from a silver trophy cup. Roath had been treated for depression at the Mercy clinic, run by an old friend of Barnaby’s, Dr Jane Moore. Dr Moore doesn’t believe suicide either.

Roath had been married to Sarah Roath. Sarah is now happily living with local pharmacist and band master Gordon Leesmith. Apparently Martin Roath had been pestering the couple for some time. One of Gordon’s band trophies is missing from the mantelpiece.

The Mercy clinic is run jointly by Dr Moore and Dr Tony Parish. The revamped clinic is celebrating its first year in operation. Dr Parish appears unwell at the party and is later found hanged in the grounds by Troy and Cully. The autopsy, however, says he was drowned before being hung and that he had tanzine in his blood stream. Parish had been Roath’s doctor at the clinic. Roath had not been liked by the inmates, in particular by another patient Dean Hunniset. Hunniset had been sent for treatment for his violent crimes.

Next to die is Gordon Leesmith. He is found hanged in the band room. Wrappings for a parcel are found nearby, which, when traced, are found to have contained a majorette’s uniform. Other small crimes are reported around the village. Lots of rope is disappearing from washing lines, flag poles and the assault course at the Mercy Clinic. The answer to the missing rope becomes apparent when lots of clothes lines are found at the local cricket ground. Amongst the washing is the majorette uniform. Barnaby investigates and finds Dr Moore’s three children having a picnic. He joins them and has tea. Shortly afterwards he falls asleep in his car.

When Barnaby awakes it is dark. He gets out of the car to investigate the clothes lines and is the subject of an attempted strangling, only prevented by the appearance of Troy. Barnaby had seen Dean Hunniset at the cricket club earlier and looks for him the following morning. In his garden shed at the Mercy clinic Barnaby and Troy find lots of rope. When asked why he had the rope he tells Barnaby that he is trying to stop the others using it. By the others he means Dr Moore’s children. It was they who had drugged Barnaby. The children are arrested and confess to the murders. They wanted their mother to themselves. Anyone who showed a relationship with her had to be eliminated. This also include their father who died in a climbing accident.
