The Tongariro National Trout Centre, a popular tourist attraction, is situated 4 kilometers south of the township of Turangi, on at the southern end of Lake Taupo. Parking space is adjacent to State Highway 1.

Situated beside the famous Tongariro River, you can see and feed wild Trout in their natural environment. The new Visitor Centre is the home of an extensive collection of Taupo and freshwater fishing memorabilia. The highlight of your visit will be viewing many of New Zealand's native fresh water fish in the Genesis Energy Fresh Water Aquarium. Take a walk through the park grounds, see trout in the underwater viewing chamber and enjoy your own 'Riverwalk' beside the famous Tongariro River where you may be lucky enough to see an angler catching a rainbow trout.

Opening hours are daily:
1 Dec to 30Apr: 10am to 4pm
1 May to 30Nov: 10am to 3pm
Closed on Good Friday, ANZAC Day & Christmas Day.

Visitor Centre and Museum: There is a $10 charge for adults but accompanied children are free.
Price includes full entry to the Vistor Centre Museum, Genesis Energy Fresh Water Aquarium, Hatchery, Underwater Viewing Chamber, Children's Pond, River and Bush Walk.

The Free part: If you just want to picnic and wander through the DOC site along the walkways, find the geocache, see trout in the stream and underwater viewing chamber, visit the Childrens fishing pool and stroll beside the Tongariro River, this is all FREE of charge.

There is a Cycle/Walkway alongside SH1 from Turangi to the Trout Centre. Parking is available at the Entrance to the Trout Centre. From here you will walk down the sloped path into the Trout Centre Grounds. You will cross over the stream and see trout in the pools. This is FREE, but you may wish to pay the extra entry fee into the Visitor Centre/Museum.
