EN: The Roman Catholic Church Bruder Klaus is located in the south of Birsfelden on the Hardstrasse. It was inaugurated in 1959 and replaced an earlier building on the same location, which was demolished in 1956.
An architectural competition was held, and the winner was a design by Hermann Baur, who is one of Switzerland's most important architects of the 20th century. The site is partitioned into a square courtyard, the church and the semi-circular tower, that is connected to the church by a covered walkway. The exterior is made of raw concrete, glass and copper, the interior is dominated by light wood and granite. The tower is open to the south and provides a view to a spiral staircase to the bell cage.
DE: Die römisch-katholische Kirche Bruder Klaus befindet sich im Süden von Birsfelden an der Hardstrasse. Sie wurde 1959 eingeweiht und ersetzte einen Vorgängerbau an der selben Stelle, der 1956 abgebrochen wurde.
Für den Neubau wurde ein Architekturwettbewerb durchgeführt; der Gewinner war ein Entwurf von Hermann Baur, der als einer der bedeutendsten Schweizer Architekten des 20. Jahrhunderts gilt. Die Anlage ist gegliedert in einen quadratischen Vorplatz, die Kirche und den über einen gedeckten Gang verbundenen halbrunden Turm. Das Äussere besteht aus Sichtbeton, Glas und Kupfer; im Inneren dominiert helles Holz und Granit. Der Turm ist gegen Süden geöffnet und gibt den Blick auf eine Wendeltreppe zum Glockenstuhl frei.
