Burney Falls is located just off Calif. Hwy. 89 in McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. Burney Falls is a great example of a river drainage regulated by stratigraphically controlled springs and a waterfall formed by undercutting of horizontal rock layers. The site covers 10 acres within the larger McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. The falls were declared a National Natural Landmark in December 1984.
Burney Creek is fed by spring which are straitigraphically controlled at the base of thick lava flows over fine grained sediments. The falls have migrated upstream by undercutting the sediment beneath the lava flow resulting in collapse of the lava flow. The falls are 250 feet wide and drop 114 feet.
