An impressive memorial at the side of the main B1010 road through this Essex village commemorates the fallen in both World Wars

This is an impressive memorial placed on the main B1010 road which runs from South Woodham Ferrers to Burnham on Crouch, it is at the junction with Station Road in Althorne village. The structure shows the names of the fallen who died in the first world war from the village.
Around the edge of the main dedication panel, the inscription reads,

Althorne also sent forth Men to fight that ye might inherit freedom and peace with Victory Honour therefore those who died unto this end

Through the middle of the panel it reads,

They were a wall unto us both by day and night

The names listed are 1914-1918
