1912: Arizona becomes the 48th U.S. state and the last of the contiguous United States which ends the American Frontier.
1922: DeWitt and Lila Wallace publish the first issue of Reader's Digest.
1932: The 1932 Winter Olympics open in Lake Placid, New York.
1942: The 14th Academy Awards ceremony is held in Los Angeles; How Green Was My Valley wins Best Picture.
1952: Winston Churchill scraps UK compulsory national Identity Cards.
1962: The Rolling Stones make their debut at London's Marquee Club, Number 165 Oxford Street, opening for Long John Baldry.
1972: U.S. President Richard Nixon orders the development of a space shuttle program
1982: A rally against nuclear weapons draws 750,000 to New York City's Central Park.
1992: President of the United States George H. W. Bush meets with President of Russia Boris Yeltsin at Camp David, where they formally declare that the Cold War is over.
2003: At the conclusion of the STS-107 mission, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrates during reentry over Texas, killing all 7 astronauts on board.
