The Batten Kill originates near East Dorset, Vermont and flows approximately 60 miles to the Hudson River near Schuylerville, New York. The length of the river is about evenly split between New York and Vermont. There are four covered bridges spanning this river, three of which are still in service. The Arlington Green Bridge is the oldest, dating from 1852.

The bridge, also called the West Arlington Bridge or the Bridge at the Green, sustained damage in 2011 when the remnant of Hurricane Irene passed over the state of Vermont. But this was not the only time the bridge had to weather storms. According to the USPS, the bridge was knocked on its side by flood waters shortly after it was built. The structure was so sturdy that people were still able to cross the river by walking on the side of the bridge.

This stamp, issued in 2013, continued the trend of putting bridges on express mail stamps. Also seen on the stamp is the Chapel on the Green United Methodist Church built in 1804.
