Looking at the site today, you realize immediately that there was a logistical challenge in providing rail service to the area. The main north-south rail line passes 50 feet overhead, with the depot beneath a long steel-girder-supported trestle.
Passenger trains diverted several miles to the west and approached the station after dropping in altitude. Beyond the station, the track bends into a mile-long circular track so the train reverses direction without having to back up. The rails have been removed, but the bed remains. It also is visible on a topo map.
Three years after the station was constructed, the Coast and Geodetic Survey placed a brass Benchmark at the site, and it remains mounted vertically in the north wall of the station. The description for the benchmark refers to it being a certain distance from the door to the "white waiting room"--a reminder of an era which was much different from today.
The building is located on W. First Street, just west of downtown Weldon. It currently serves as the Town Library.
