This fishway is on private property. Be respectful. Park carefully on the south side of County Road 21.
The South Nation Conservation Authority supervised the construction of the 116 metre bypass channel in 2006. For decades, a small dam built for sawmill operations had blocked the passage of fish. Since the fishway construction in 2006, vegetation growth along the fishway channel has made the entrance and exit well hidden from human eyes. The success of this particular fishway is examined in an article "Biological effectiveness of an inexpensive nature-like fishway for passage of warmwater fish in a small Ontario stream" published in a 2013 issue of Ecology of Freshwater Fish. Seven species of fish are using this fishway. Three most abundant fish species are white sucker, common shiner and creek chub. Unfortunately for spectators, the article states that more than 90% of the fish used this fishway during the night period.
