A native of Pittsylvania County, Wayne Ashworth bought the family tobacco farm in 1955. He joined the Pittsylvania County Farm Bureau in the 1960s, and served in a variety of posts at the county and state levels.

In 1988 Wayne Ashworth took over as head of the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation, and led the organization with great effectiveness for a decade as president of the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation, until his retirement in December 1998.

During Wayne Ashworth's tenure, membership in the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation increased from 90,000 to 142,000, with membership increases in each of the Farm Bureau’s 88 county offices.

Wayne Ashworth led the effort to persuade Congress to increase the estate tax exemption on family farms from $600,000 to $1.3 million, a measure that will prevent the sale of many family farms to pay federal inheritance taxes.

Working with other agricultural groups, Wayne Ashworth was instrumental in starting the Ag Initiative, which encouraged previously separate organizations to work together for common goals.

In early 1998 Wayne Ashworth was named the Virginia Man of the Year in Service to Agriculture by Progressive Farmer magazine.

Wayne Ashworth, a consistent, reliable, and dedicated advocate, spokesman, and friend to Virginia’s farmers.
