This geologic history sign is located at Devils Lake.
Marker Name: Fire & Ice
Marker Text: Nearly 15,000 years ago, a glacier covered this entire area. In front of you are Talapus and Katsuk Buttes. These nearby forested hills began to erupt far below the ice.
To the north, you can see volcanic deposits that were formed early in the eruption. These deposits cooled quickly into a black and very glassy material called hyaloclastite. After many years of weathering, the hyaloclastite alters to palagonite, the yellowish brown material you now see.
Once the ice melted, it became more of a typical strombolian (cinder cone) eruption.
The lava was so full of gases, it erupted like a shaken can of soda with lava cinders exploding into the air. As the lava degassed and became more liquid, it breached the side of the cinder cone. This liquid lava flowed out into the surrounding ice and was trapped resulting in a tuya.
Tuya: a rare flat-topped steep-sided volcano which began erupting beneath a glacier and is different than the more common conical shape of a cinder cone.
