Fountain was a small community in Brookings County that was settled in 1876, (Some sources say 1878) with the settlers hoping the railroad would pass through the town.

Later, the Dakota Railroad located and built the railroad line five miles south of the town.

A spur was constructed to the town of Fountain, but eventually all the people moved away, thus abandoning the town.
