Text of marker:

Life On The Row
The 1880's

By the mid 1880's Officers' Row was one of the most sophisticated residential centers north of San Francisco.  Garrison concerts filled the grounds with music.  Plays entertained audiences.  New homes, street lamps, and sidewalks graced the Row.  The rich and famous were routinely hosted by the commanding officer.  President  Rutherford B. Hayes was the first President in office to visit the west coast and concluded that visit at  Officers' Row in 1880.
