Both Washington, IL and Washington DC were named after the same man, but that's where the similarities end.

East of the city of Peoria is the city of Washington,IL, a suburban community with the same name as the great city, Washington, DC.

Washington, IL and Washington, DC are named after the same man, General of the Continental Army and first US President, George Washington. But, that's where the similarities end.

Washington, District of Columbia - the only city not within the jurisdiction of a state - has a population of about 630,000 people. It is an extrememly urban city with a dense metropolitan area around it. This city is the government center of the United States of America.

Washington, Illinois, has a population of about 16,000 people, a small fraction of the large city. It is an urban area surrounded on three sides by corn fields. This Washington is a commercial center for the area, but not a government center. Though it isn't as ostentatious as its larger namesake, it is a pretty city. The downtown is neat and inviting. There is a bakery/cafe that draws a crowd and a green in the center, complete with a fountain.

The waymark is located on the green, Washington Square, at a brick pillar that has a plaque about George Washington, explaining how the town was named after him. The water tank bearing the name is a few blocks north along Main Street.
