[EN] "Schlammbeißer" (mud biter) is a nickname for the people of Gießen. But actually, the word should read "Schlamp-Eiser."
Before there was a sewage system in Gießen the toilets were on the outer walls of the houses. The excrements went outside through wooden pipes and were collected in large buckets. In the old town, the houses were built close together and the buckets stood in the narrow spaces between the houses. With long poles on which were fastened iron hooks [Schlamp-Eisen], the buckets were pulled out from between the houses and carried away by a coachman. This was the smelly job of the Schlammbeiser.
