The Doomsday Record of 1086 recorded the history at that time. These records are now available on line with basic information. The Domesday Book was commissioned in December 1085 by order of William The Conqueror. William needed to raise taxes to pay for his army and so a survey was set in motion to assess the wealth and and assets of his subjects throughout the land. This survey was also needed to asses the state of the country's economy in the aftermath of the Conquest and the unrest that followed it.

First published in 1086, it contains records for 13,418 settlements in the English counties south of the rivers Ribble and Tees (the border with Scotland at the time).

At Westerham in Kent it is recorded that the town was called Oistreham. The Mosaic in Westerham is based on the information gathered withing the Doomsday Book.

From the Mosaic you can see a young couple. Pigs in the foreground would have indicated the farming / wild pigs in what would have been at that time, a more wooded area. There is a water wheel which is driven by the local river and would have powered the local mill, and farmers on their land ploughing. The ploughs would have been pulled by Oxen. I believe they allowed for 8 Oxen per plough.

This Mosaic is just off the High Street in the centre of Westerham. The address below is for an adjacent building. There is a large brown tourist information sign that points down a narrow street to where the mosaic is. There is limited parking there, or plenty in the town. Parking in the town is free on Sundays.
