Rosemary & Thyme are engaged to repair the gardens in an English village which has been entered into a garden competition. All the gardens have been vandalised, except for local builder Barry Skinner. Rosemary finds that the plants have been killed with Ammonium Sulphomate, plenty of which can be found in Barry Skinner’s yard.

Things take a turn for the worse when Donald Westward is found dead in his garden. Mr Westward is a retired surgeon and a bigwig in local affairs, including the garden competition. Donald Westward is known to be friendly with Vilma Hockham, a South African lady with a penchant for exotic plants. Rosemary visits Vilma and realises that one of her plants is lethal, inducing heart attacks in humans.

Meanwhile, a local gardener, called Judd, comes under suspicion after it is realised that the Ammonium Sulphomate has been mixed with forests bark. The bark is supplied by Judd. At Judd’s house Rosemary & Thyme see Judd running away, so the pair investigate his garden, only to find Judd dead. Obviously the person running away was not Judd.

Once it is realised that Judd had a heart attack, Rosemary works out that Vilma is the murderer. She confronts Vilma, who pulls out a blow pipe, armed with plant poison. The police arrive in time to disarm her. Vilma’s motive for killing Donald Westward was the botched operation Westward had carried out on her brother, just before he retired to the village.
