A Mangabey is an endangered genus of Old World monkeys found only in Africa. There are nine species of Mangabey that live in Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Zaire, Kenya and Tanzania. This 3' high sculpture entitled Mangabey was created in 1955 by William Kent. The marble mangabey is looking straight ahead while sitting on a marble plinth. Its left knee raised and its right arm rests on its right foot. The Mangabey is sited on a wall on top of the steps leading up to the museum entrance to welcome visitors to the Museum. It was acquired by the Museum in 1974.
