Sensory Garden
A Garden for the Sense. A Garden for Everyone
This garden was designed to excite the five senses. Key plant materials to smell (flowers and/or foliage), touch (various leaf textures), taste (herbs, vegetables and edible ornamentals), see (miscellaneous ornamentals) and possibly hear (seed pods, grasses, etc). are planted in accessible beds to be enjoyed by all including those with physical limitations. Research has demonstrated the importance of human interaction with plants regarding mental, physical, and emotional well being. We have strived to be as inclusive as possible to reach all populations that visit this garden and enjoy the therapeutic value of plants.

Sound: Selecting Plants for the Senses
Taking time to stop and truly listen can expand one's sensory experience in the garden. Many plants generate subtle but distinctive sounds as they are jostled and rustled by the wind or individuals. Fallen leaves, seed pods, and other plant parts provide a crunching sound as one strolls through the garden. Selecting plants that attract birds, insects, and other animals will enliven a garden with a variety of additional sounds. Below are some successful plant selections:
Crossvine, Salvia, Hardy Hibiscus, Inland Oat Grass, Yellow Bells.
