The Coal Duty Posts website (http://www.coaldutyposts.org.uk/today/list.html)
tells us that:
178 - 2d - TQ3712659131 - S side of Harrow Road at
junction with Chelsham Road
Access: Beside road
The same
website tell us
about a Type 2 boundary mark:
Form: Square post with chamfered corners, a pyramidal
top and decorative raised bands, with (except for type 2z) the shield from
the City's arms and a raised inscription referring to the Act for which it
was originally made (in most cases that of 1861).
Material: Cast iron
Dimensions: Normally about 1.2 metres tall (though see below), 300 mm square
at base
Use: On roads and tracks
Inscription: See below
Date: 1859-1864, but some undated
These are the standard "City Posts" which form 85% of the surviving boundary
marks. They are found not only beside roads and tracks but also in some
cases in field boundary fences and on open heaths far away from modern
roads. The posts were cast by Henry Grissell at the Regents Canal Ironworks,
Eagle Wharf Road, Hoxton. They are 2 metres high in total of which about 1
to 1.2 metres is normally above ground, though some are buried very much
more deeply.
The post is in average condition and would benefit from some maintenance
being performed on it.
