Michael Bannerman used to run the pub, The Maid In Splendour, but now ownership has passed to his son Stephen. Stephen is having an affair with Bella Monday. They are using a shack in the woods. Unfortunately, one of Bella’s other admirers, Jamie, is shot dead outside the shack. Jamie was a waiter at the Maid.

There is a lot of ill feeling locally about Lawrence Haggard. Haggard is slowly buying up property in the village and has designs on buying the Maid. Stephen is secretly hoping to sell the Maid to Haggard, but his wife has other ideas. Changes to the Maid are not popular with Michael Bannerman, or with the locals. Stephen is on his way to do a deal with Haggard one night and is shot dead in an alley.

The solution to the murders turns out to be relatively straightforward. Michael Bannerman is the culprit. Jamie had just been given a new wax coat and cap, similar to that of Stephen Bannerman. Michael shot Jamie thinking he was Stephen. Michael was in love with Bella and didn’t want Stephen as a rival. He eventually shot Stephen to prevent the sale of the Maid. Unfortunately Stephen’s wife refurbished the Maid and turned into a bistro.
