The episode opens with Dr Burgess of Newton Magna hitting a man in a car. Dr Burgess staggers to the local pub for help, but when he returns to his car he finds no injured man. Barnaby agrees to investigate the disappearance.

During his investigation he comes across Melvyn Stockard, one time robber, now the local squire of the manner. Barnaby deduces that the missing man may be Sean O’Connell, a so-called horse whisperer. He starts to make connections between Stockard, O’Connell and a local stables owned by Francesca Ward, particularly as Dr Burgess had been entertained by Stockard and Ward before the accident.

Barnaby’s work increases when a body is pulled from the village well. The body is that of the Robin Wooliscroft, father of Noel Wooliscroft. Noel is to be the best man at the wedding of Julie Stockard and Chris Megson. To complicate matters it had been assumed that Valerie Megson, Chris’s mother, had run off with Robin Wooliscroft. Mary Mohan, who had helped Valerie leave her abusive husband Joe, is later found murdered. Suspicion moves to Joe Megson.

When Barnaby investigates Dr Burgess’s car he finds that it went to the local garage. The garage owner also had Robin Woolicroft’s car and has recently had his debts paid off. Upon further investigation Barnaby finds that Bridget Wooliscroft and the garage owner, Bill Pitman had been the murderers of Robin Wooliscroft. The horse whisperer had come to investigate the disappearance of Robin on behalf of Valerie Megson.
