St. Mary's dates from the days when it was required that Catholics be buried in Catholic cemeteries. If memory serves Mrs. Team Blakelylaw correctly (she grew up in Springfield), St. Mary's is also the oldest of the town's Catholic cemeteries. It gravestones go back to at at least the latter part of the 19th Century.
According to the Find-a-Grave website, there are over 3,000 interments in St. Mary's.
