This Dawn Redwood tree is not yet majestic. Concerning the species, before 1941 many scientists considered the
Metasequoia glyptostroboides to be extinct. Concerning this specific tree, in April 1996 the major part of the mother tree had to be cut down. Despite the difficult start, the sapling continues to grow.
There is a bulge in the trunk where the mother tree and this sapling join, making it difficult to measure the true diameter of tree. The diameter is significantly less than one metre, perhaps 25 centimetres.
This Dawn Redwood can be found in the northern portion of the conifer sector of the arboretum. The donation placard mentioning Elmars and Velta Alutis should be easy to spot. Suggested parking is at the nearby lookouts. Surprisingly, this exotic sapling is not mentioned in Rirchad Hinchcliff's For the Love of Trees: A Guide to the Trees of Ottawa's Central Experimental Farm Arboretum (2007).
