The Manor House dates back to around 1665 and was a border trading post and fort. Stephanus Van Cortlandt began to acquire land in the area around 1677. He began to build his country house on the foundation and walls of the old fort. By 1697 he owned some 85,000 acres of land in the area, which elevated the status of his house into the Manor of Cortlandt, making Stephanus its First Lord. This was thru a Royal patent date June 17, 1697. In 1749 Pierre Van Cortlandt was the first to occupy the house year round and became the Third Lord of the Manor. Pierre was prominent in public life in the Province on New York and was one of the foremost supporters of the Revolution by the colonials. The house housed Rochambean, Lafayette, von Steuben and Washington during the war.

The Van Cortlandt Manor is important as an early frontier home during the colonial era in the Hudson Valley. It is Dutch-English in style.
