Lake Sevan (In Armenian: Sevana lich), the largest lake in Armenia and the Caucasus region and "pearl" of Armenia, is also one of the largest fresh-water high-altitude lakes in the world.

The Sevan is a lake of tectonic origin, surrounded by several volcanic mountain ranges. In sunny days the lake, like a mirror, reflects the blue sky and snowy mountains and in overcast days represents a roar and violent picture. With an area of 1 360 km², lying at 1 905 m above sea level in a mountain-enclosed basin, it drains by the Hrazdan River into the Aras River and to the Caspian Sea, but most of its water is lost by evaporation rather than by runoff. The lake is in two connected parts, the smaller but deeper Small Sevan (NW), with a maximum depth of 86 m, and the Great Sevan (SE), reaching 40 min depth. The construction of six hydroelectric plants on the Hrazdan led to a fall of the lake level. To stabilize its level, a 49 km tunnel to divert water from the Arpa River was constructed in the late 1970s. Lake Sevan is rich in fish, especially trout, and fishing is important. Beautiful landscape and beaches on Sevan shore are also important touristic area for whole Armenia and also one of key targets of foreign visitórs of the country.
