From motorway rest area Gudenaa East, E45, there is access to the 119-hectare wetland Vorup Enge.

Vorup Enge was for several thousand years a part of The Gudenå inland delta. The area consisted of a large number of islands that were covered with reeds and meadows. These islands were flooded by Gudenåen at high tide and was exposed at low tide.

In 1951, Vorup Enge was cut off from Gudenåen by dikes and the areas were artificially drained by pumps. The area was then cultivated with cereals or grazed by cattle.

In 2003 Vorup Enge was restored to the time before the dikes. The aim was to restore a wetland for the benefit of wildlife and plants and to reduce nitrogenleaching to the river.

During the summer half-year the eastern pastures are grazed by old landraces of Danish domestic animals, among others. The western part, near this Waymark, are grazed year-round by the old European bison. The European bison was formerly a common species in Europe.

In the early 1900s there were still wild populations in Bialoweza forest in Poland and in the Caucasus. World War I put an end to the Polish population and the Caucasian population became extinct soon after.

There was only 56 animals in zoos, and from these animals originated the current population of European bison. Through an international breeding cooperation in zoos, the number has exceeded 3000, and the cooperation has managed to establish viable populations in protected areas.
