The velodrome was originally built for the 1994 Commonwealth Games, which were held in Greater Victoria. It was closed in August 2008 over liability concerns regarding the fraying and damaged infield artificial turf. After the turf was repaired and insurance renewed, the track reopened in July 2011. At the time of this visit, the turf has been removed and may be replaced with new turf.
The track is 333.3 metres long and has banking of 29 degrees in the turns and 10 degrees in the straights. It's one of only 8 velodromes in Canada, and the only outdoor velodrome in BC.
