It is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

At this point the milestone is 85.25 miles from the start at Leeds and 42 miles from the port of Liverpool.

The milestone is quite distressed and painted black rather than the more normal white. The metal plate with the Leeds distance on it has been split in half with the word MILES missing.
