It is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.
At this point the milestone is 91.25 miles from the start at Leeds and 36 miles from the port of Liverpool.
The milestone is standing next to a brick wall and is installed in such a way that it is half the normal height of milestones on this canal. It is not clear whether it has been buried deeper than normal or damaged in some way.
