It is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.
At this point the milestone is 75.25 miles from the start at Leeds and 52 miles from the port of Liverpool.
The distance plates on this milestone are badly damaged and only the distances can be seen. It requires a bit of local knowledge to work out which distance relates to Leeds and which to Liverpool
