It is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.
This milestone marks the half way point along the canal and is an extra one slotted in between the normal mile markers.
At this point the milestone is 63 5/8 miles from the start at Leeds and 63 5/8 miles from the port of Liverpool.
Extending outwards from the milestone a metal rod is embedded into a set of cobblestones on the tow path.
There is also a metal silhouette sculpture around the milestone depicting nearby scenes. The names of Leeds and Liverpool are also picked out in the metal work. The design of the panel was done by local schoolchildren.
