The church was erected in 1387 to 1454 on the site of an earlier building of 1182, which was originally dedicated to Mary Magdalene. The tower with its pointed spire was placed in 1585. In the 17th Century, the interior was remodeled.

In the interior there are a few remains of frescoes from the 15th Century to be seen.

The church is connected to some well-known people: The French church reformer John Calvin (visit link) preached and held religious services in St. Nicholas. Also, Albert Schweitzer was a vicar for some time in this church, where on April 11, 1908 he conducted the wedding ceremony of Theodor Heuss, the future first president of the Federal Republic of Germany.
