Established in 1945, the 890-plus acre Cliffs of the Neuse State Park is located about 14 miles southeast of Goldboro and offers a visitor center, an eleven acre spring-fed lake for swimming and four hiking trails with scenic views of the Neuse River from ninety foot bluffs made up of layers of sand, clay, seashells, shale and gravel. In an area rich with Native American, Colonial, Revolutionary and Civil War history, the park offers a year ‘round campground with 35 spacious wooded sites along a .3 mile teardrop-shaped paved one-way road. Sites 1-9 will have water and electric in the near future while sites 10-34 do not have water or electric. Four water spigots are located near the roadway. An RV dump site is available. A bath house with electrical outlets, 5 sinks, 3 urinals, 3 flush toilets, and 4 showers for men and 5 sinks, 3 flush toilets and 4 showers for women is located in the center of the loop.

A separate, secluded primitive camping area with pit toilets is available for church, scout and other large groups.

Swimming at the lake, as well as paddle boat and canoe rentals is available during summer months for an additional fee.

Fishing on the Neuse River is permitted with the proper license. Fishing is not permitted at the lake.

Camp site registrations can be done online or at the visitor center during business hours. After hours, registrations are handled by rangers or the camp host (when there is one at site 34). Bundles of firewood and bags of ice may be purchased from staff, rangers and camp hosts.

Junior Ranger activity books are available at the Visitor Center and can be done with the assistance of an adult or a Park Ranger. See photo of the patch that can be earned.

The park superintendent welcomes camp hosts year ‘round and provides a free camp site with water and electric in exchange for a few hours of volunteer work each week. Duties vary depending on the season and the needs of the park. Volunteer hours are tracked and credited toward earning free camping at a North Carolina state park of your choice.
