These simple single-bottom plows were probably pulled by a horse for most or all of their working life. Once tractors came into common use and attachment methods improved, an operator was no longer needed to walk behind the plow. The steel straps that secured the wooden operator's handles to the plow can be seen at their attachment point on one plow and the empty fastener hole at the same point on the second plow.
