A baby, Faith, is abducted from the Groves family home whilst Frances is out shopping and Stephen is in the garden. Gently learns that Faith has been adopted from a home for unmarried mothers, run by Mrs Dunwoody. At the home Gently finds out that the unmarried mother, Susan Faulkner, had twins, and that after Faith was adopted, she absconded with the other child. Gently traces Susan, but doesn’t find the child.
A ransom note is received by the Groves. Gently and Bacchus set up a sting at the rendezvous for the ransom. The man they catch doesn’t have the child, but wants revenge on Stephen Groves for an affair Groves had with his wife.
Gently and Bacchus keep watch on the Groves family home and follow Frances and a man to Cleadon Mill. After the rendezvous Gently approach the couple and the man tries to throttle Frances. Bacchus intervenes, but the man falls badly and dies later in hospital. The man turns out to be Frances’s son. She had the child after Stephen went into the army, and had him adopted at the same home Faith came from. Gently returns to the home to find that Faith has been left there. Gently decides to reunite Faith with her real mother, rather than return her to the Groves.
